These situations are symptomatic of viruses. A virus is a program that enters your PC without your knowledge or permission. It gets on your machine when you download programs from unreliable, harmful or malicious websites, emails or from other devices such as pirated CDs.

Viruses can be as harmless as slowing down your PC, to as destructive as wiping out all the information you have on your machine. The faster you remove the virus, the less the chance the virus will multiply in your machine.

Another threat to PCs that can slow performance is spyware. Spyware is a program that is put on your machine by someone who wants to monitor what you do on your machine. Someone who has installed spyware can potentially monitor every keystroke you make, enabling them to capture such important information as account numbers and passwords. You need to take precautions to protect your PC.
